Dec. 15, 1924 – Boston Wonder Workers announce stadium expansion

The Boston Wonder Workers planned to expand seating at the Walpole St. Grounds, their home from 1924-29. The stadium, built as a baseball park, occupied land owned by the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad, now on the campus of Northeastern University. Dec. 14, 1924 – Fall River 2:1 Boston Wonder Workers, Mark’s Stadium (Att.: 8,337)

Fall River regained first place in the ASL, rallying after falling behind in the first half before a crowd that included several Boston supporters. Wouterez opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, Tommy Croft equalizing “within a half minute …” Croft broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute. Croft, who began his career with Glentoran, scored once in three appearances for Northern Ireland.

Bert Patenaude led the way with five goals for the New York Giants. Dec. 12, 1914 – New Bedford 4:2 (1:0 halftime) Fall River Rovers, National Cup (U.S. Open Cup) series (Att.: 1,800)

New Bedford went on to be eliminated by Fore River in the third round. The Rovers won the 1917 U.S. Open Cup and advanced to the finals in 1916 and ’18. Goals: Stewart (PK), Chadwick 2, Norse; Swords, Dalton (PK).

Harvard 2:0 Columbia, Soldiers’ Field

Harvard (3W-1L-2D, 8 points) finished second to Penn. “… it is fitting to point out what the Crimson’s coach, Charley Burgess, has done. In his five years he has provided Harvard with two championship teams, has had another tied for first place and twice his teams have ranked second. This is some record.”

Andover (10W-0L-1D, 21 points) first place. Lawrence Olympics (10-0-1, 20 points) second place. Lawrence (4-3-3, 11 points) fifth place.

Dec. 12, 1891 –East Ends 2:2 Rovers, New England League series, Fall River, Mass. (Att.: 8,000)

The Fall River Rovers had defeated the East Ends the previous week but “… East End management and backers, however, were not satisfied with the result, and as a consequence today’s game was arranged.” Sharrocks opened the scoring and the East Ends had a 2-0 lead before the Rovers equalized on “a magnificent long drive” by Kenny and Harrington’s header off a pass from Culligan. “The decisive game will be played later.” East Ends won American FA Cups: defeating the Brooklyn Longfellows, 3-1, in 1891; and New York Thistle, 5-2, in 1892.

Fore River lineup includes RH James McGonnigal, CH Jack McGonnigal, LH W. McGonnigal. James McGonnigal also boxed professionally after winning the New England amateur junior welterweight title. McGonnigal, “a member of a prominent local family of steel shipbuilders, was a member of the staff of the national office of the Industrial Union of Marine Shipbuilders of America, AFL-CIO. Dec. 9, 2008 – Revolution defender Michael Parkhurst joins FC Nordsjaelland on free transfer

Michael Parkhurst set standards as a central defender in four seasons with the Revolution. Parkhurst’s ability to command the back line allowed coach Steve Nicol to switch to a 3-5-2 alignment that keyed the team’s success from 2005-08. Parkhurst went on to play in the Champions League and Europa League, returning to MLS to perform for the Columbus Crew and captain Atlanta United’s 2018 MLS Cup-winning team.

The Revolution fell for the fifth time in five MLS Cup appearances over a 13-year span. Three of those losses were to the LA Galaxy (all in extra time), who also defeated the Revolution, 2-1, in extra time in the 2001 U.S. Open Cup final.

The Whalers’ Jeremiah “Jerry” Best scored five goals and Tommy Florie added a sixth. Best, who led the ASL with 35 goals in 27 games, played for Newcastle United and Leeds United before joining Providence as a 23-year-old in 1924. Frank Dell'Apa

Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist. Dell’Apa has covered seven World Cups, MLS since the league started, and continues to be involved with the NASL as part of a New York Cosmos Podcast.
