The Revolution fell for the fifth time in five MLS Cup appearances over a 13-year span. Three of those losses were to the LA Galaxy (all in extra time), who also defeated the Revolution, 2-1, in extra time in the 2001 U.S. Open Cup final.

Game staged on the afternoon of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Frannie Quinn (Celtics) and Harry Burness (St. Michael’s) were ejected. Burness would enlist in the Army and perish in the line of duty in France in 1944.
