The Revolution fell for the fifth time in five MLS Cup appearances over a 13-year span. Three of those losses were to the LA Galaxy (all in extra time), who also defeated the Revolution, 2-1, in extra time in the 2001 U.S. Open Cup final.

The Galaxy had lost to San Jose in its third MLS Cup appearance on Oct. 21, 2001. The Galaxy would capture its first MLS Cup with a 1-0 extra time victory over the Revolution on Oct. 20, 2002. Danny Califf headed in a 91st-minute golden goal after Alexi Lalas, inserted as a forward, took an errant pass from William Sunsing to set up a corner kick. The crowd included a “suite”-ensconced Phil Anschutz, who afterward took photos on the field while celebrating. Tournament chairman John Motta noted: “It would make sense for the winner of this tournament to be included in the [CONCACAF] Champions League.”  Goals: Hendrickson, Califf; Harris. D.C. United became the first dominant team of MLS, but only after overcoming a late two-goal deficit against the LA Galaxy in the inaugural MLS Cup. David Beckham’s presence – on the Galaxy bench – attracted the largest Gillette Stadium soccer attendance since 2002 MLS Cup. A.J. Soares became a New England Revolution starter in central defense, paired with Franco Coria, in the team’s season-opener, a 1-1 draw with the Los Angeles Galaxy at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on March 20, 2011. Soares, who totaled 101 appearances and five goals in all competitions with the Revolution, concluded his time with the team in the 2014 MLS Cup final, a 2-1 extra time loss to the Galaxy at the StubHub Center in Carson. Dec. 11, 2013 – Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis announces retirement

When Matt Reis joined MLS in 1998, there were few openings for starting goalkeepers. And, after four seasons playing mostly as a backup to Kevin Hartman with the Los Angeles Galaxy, Reis set up a deal that took him to the Revolution, one of the teams Reis reasoned would give him a chance to start. Reis turned out to be right, as an Adin Brown injury led to Reis becoming the Revolution’s first-choice ‘keeper for the next 10 years. Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist.
