D.C. United became the first dominant team of MLS, but only after overcoming a late two-goal deficit against the LA Galaxy in the inaugural MLS Cup. Before the ’96 MLS Cup, a northeaster cancelled the Head of the Charles regatta for the first time in its 32-year history and left Kenmore Square Station under 10 feet of water.

Eduardo Hurtado (5) and Chris Armas (54) opened the scoring. Substitutes Tony Sanneh (73) and Shawn Medved (83) equalized off Marco Antonio Etcheverry free kicks and Eddie Pope headed in golden goal (94) off an Etcheverry corner.

“My goal was to learn English and become champions of the league with Washington,” Etcheverry said in Spanish. He accomplished at least one goal.

In ’02, the Revolution made a late-season run (5W-0L-1D) to qualify for the playoffs. In the final, a Carlos Ruiz golden goal (113) at the bridge end of the stadium came just after Revolution substitute Winston Griffiths shot off the bar. Mauricio Cienfuegos and Cobi Jones played in 1996 and ’02 MLS Cup finals.
