The New England Revolution won their first Independence Day match as former University of Vermont star Jim St. Andre had a spectacular performance in goal and the Revolution held off the Galaxy after Alexi Lalas’ 80th-minute red card, following an altercation with a ball boy. John Kerr’s sliding finish just ahead of former Williams College defender Dan Calichman made the difference. [Read more…] about July 4, 1996 – LA Galaxy 0:1 Revolution at Rose Bowl (Att.: 62,703)

June 26, 1996 – Revolution acquire John Kerr Jr. from Dallas Burn in exchange for Zak Ibsen

June 26, 2017 by frankdellapa@gmail.com

Kerr’s arrival would help the New England Revolution’s offense, and also have long-term implications for New England soccer. While playing for the Revolution, Kerr worked as an assistant coach at Wellesley High School in 1997. Kerr then coached the A League Worcester Wildfire in 1998 and the Boston Bulldogs, starting in 1999. While with the Bulldogs, Kerr recruited Steve Nicol, who took over as player-coach after Kerr was named head coach at Harvard University. Kerr hired Paul Mariner as a Harvard assistant in 2003, Mariner going on to become Nicol’s assistant with the Revolution from 2004-09. March 8, 2006 – Alajuelense 1×0 Revolution

March 8, 2017 by frankdellapa@gmail.com

This was the second time in four years the Revolution had been eliminated by Alajuelense in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Carlos “Zorro” Hernandez’ 90th-minute free kick made the difference after the teams had played to a 0-0 draw in the first leg Feb. 22, 2006 in Hamilton, Bermuda. The first game was a “home” match for the Revolution, and playing at Bermuda’s national stadium seemed like a better strategy than the team had settled for three years earlier, both games being contested at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela. Today in NE Soccer History

Jan. 12, 2007 – Revolution select Wells Thompson No. 5, Amaechi Igwe No. 12 and Adam Cristman in the fourth round (48th overall) in MLS SuperDraft

Cristman looked to be carrying on a tradition of overachieving late-round Revolution picks, playing as a reserve in two of the biggest wins in team history, the 2007 U.S. Open Cup and 2008 Superliga finals. Thompson started and scored in the Open Cup final, a 3-2 victory over FC Dallas, and Igwe went the distance in central defense in a 2-2 tie and penalty kick win in the Superliga title match against the Houston Dynamo.
