Jan. 15, 1933 – Boston SC 5:2 Pawtucket Rangers, National Cup round-robin series, Lincoln Park

The Pawtucket (R.I.) Rangers, who had blanked Boston by a score of 5-0 on Jan. 14, 1933, reached the semifinals of the 1933 National Cup (U.S. Open Cup). The Rangers lost in the finals of the 1934, ’35 and 1942 U.S. Open Cup and won the 1941 tournament. Goals: McMillan 2 (PKs), Tommy Ritchie, Willie Ballantyne, Charley O’Hare; Bob McIntyre, Tommy Florie. Ejected: Harry Burness; Walter Dick.

Abbot Worsted AFC twice reached the National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) semifinals and won the 1921 and ’22 Massachusetts State Cup title. “We are not satisfied to play second fiddle to any team in this State. Fore River FC would advance to the finals of the U.S. Open Cup. J&P Coats’ Howarth (fourth minute) opened the scoring. Fore River apparently started the game with 10 players, then “Parkinson … appeared and the Quincy team settled down to its usual game.” Davie Page equalized off an Underwood-Farquhar combination. Dec. 12, 1914 – New Bedford 4:2 (1:0 halftime) Fall River Rovers, National Cup (U.S. Open Cup) series (Att.: 1,800)

New Bedford went on to be eliminated by Fore River in the third round. The Rovers won the 1917 U.S. Open Cup and advanced to the finals in 1916 and ’18. Goals: Stewart (PK), Chadwick 2, Norse; Swords, Dalton (PK).

Harvard (3W-1L-2D, 8 points) finished second to Penn. “… it is fitting to point out what the Crimson’s coach, Charley Burgess, has done. In his five years he has provided Harvard with two championship teams, has had another tied for first place and twice his teams have ranked second. This is some record.”

Andover (10W-0L-1D, 21 points) first place. Lawrence Olympics (10-0-1, 20 points) second place. Lawrence (4-3-3, 11 points) fifth place.

            Boston Rovers 1:3 Carters (Needham), Boston & District League, Rossmore Road Grounds, Jamaica Plain

Dec. 12, 1891 –East Ends 2:2 Rovers, New England League series, Fall River, Mass. (Att.: 8,000)

The Fall River Rovers had defeated the East Ends the previous week but “… East End management and backers, however, were not satisfied with the result, and as a consequence today’s game was arranged.” Sharrocks opened the scoring and the East Ends had a 2-0 lead before the Rovers equalized on “a magnificent long drive” by Kenny and Harrington’s header off a pass from Culligan. “The decisive game will be played later.” East Ends won American FA Cups: defeating the Brooklyn Longfellows, 3-1, in 1891; and New York Thistle, 5-2, in 1892.

This was a matchup of Lusitania center forward Bert Patenaude and Pawtucket’s Tommy Florie, teammates on the U.S. team that reached the 1930 World Cup semifinals. Patenaude, a 20-year-old when he became the first to complete a hat trick in the World Cup, twice headed off the crossbar. Lusitania was eliminated by Brookhattan in the quarterfinals. The New England Revolution scored in regulation time for the first time in an MLS Cup final before losing to the Dynamo for the second successive year. The Revolution, who had fallen in the 2002, ’05, ’06 finals, had been shut out in the post-season before Taylor Twellman’s 113th-minute goal snapped their 331-minute scoreless streak. Goals: Ngwenya, De Rosario; Twellman.

Nov. 1, 1913 – New Bedford FC 3:1 Farr Alpaca, National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) debut

New Bedford FC took an upset victory in the debut of the National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) as this was “the visitors’ … second reverse in three years.” Farr Alpaca (Holyoke, Mass.) opened the scoring on a Burnett penalty kick. “Becton equalized almost immediately” and “Mellor increased the score to three by notching two fine tallies …” The Boston Globe termed the tournament the “U.S. Challenge Cup.”

Frank Dell'Apa

Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist. Dell’Apa has covered seven World Cups, MLS since the league started, and continues to be involved with the NASL as part of a New York Cosmos Podcast.
