The Revolution needed a victory, the Crew at least a draw, to qualify for the fourth and final MLS Eastern Conference playoff place. “The Revolution … were thwarted only by the consistently spectacular goalkeeping of Brad Friedel” before the largest Revolution home crowd of the season. The attendance figure was not surpassed for an MLS regular-season stand-alone game until 2008. Goal: McBride (37’).

Foxboro Stadium was evacuated and kickoff delayed 72 minutes, then Dallas opened the scoring as Jason Kreis assisted Damian Alvarez (19’), and scored in the 27th minute. Alejandro Farias cut the deficit with a 29th-minute header and Alexi Lalas equalized with a 65th-minute header off an Imad Baba pass. The New England Revolution opened the scoring on Rob Ukrop’s 20th-minute goal, off a Welton cross, following an Alexi Lalas clearance. Six months later, the New England Revolution opened its inaugural season, going on to finish in fifth place in the MLS Eastern Conference and out of playoff contention. Former Boston College forward Paul Keegan’s 88th-minute goal qualified the Revolution for the MLS playoffs in the final game of the season. Keegan, an early substitute for Imad Baba (injured after a Wade Webber tackle from behind), scored his only goal of the season off a throw-in from current Revolution general manager Mike Burns.

The New England Revolution won their first Independence Day match as former University of Vermont star Jim St. Andre had a spectacular performance in goal and the Revolution held off the Galaxy after Alexi Lalas’ 80th-minute red card, following an altercation with a ball boy. The New England Revolution were among the MLS teams bidding for Lalas, who was preparing to play in Copa America for the U.S. and for the 1995-96 Serie A season with Padova. The Revolution already had defender Mike Burns lined up for the league’s inaugural season in 1996, after Burns became the second U.S. national team player (following Tab Ramos) to sign with MLS.

Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist.
