Foxboro Stadium was evacuated and kickoff delayed 72 minutes, then Dallas opened the scoring as Jason Kreis assisted Damian Alvarez (19’), and scored in the 27th minute. The Revolution became the first MLS team to lose to an amateur team in Foxborough’s inaugural U.S. Open Cup match. The Revolution fell to the Long Island Roughriders, 4-3, in extra time, in their U.S. Open Cup debut in 1997, then skipped the competition for two years. The Revolution gambled by opening Foxboro Stadium, drawing a “lively but all-time low” attendance (until a 947 crowd arrived for a 7-1 win in a rematch with the Bucks in 2001). Ponta Delgada, defending National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) and U.S. Amateur Cup champion, sustained its first home loss in four seasons. Haiti’s Joe Gaetjens, who would go on to star for the U.S. national team, led the way, the Boston Globe misspelling his first name: “Center forward Jose Gaetjens scored both Brookhattan goals.”

Two weeks after losing in the National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) final, Ponta Delgada won the U.S. Amateur Cup for the fourth time in five years. Former U.S. national team teammates Billy Gonsalves (Brooklyn Hispano) and Aldo “Buff” Donelli (Morgan) were matched in the National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) final. Gonsalves, 35, won for the eighth time in his final U.S. Open Cup final. Donelli, 36, “played a great game for the Strassers, but he was not well supported,” his teammates including his brother, Fred Donelli. (The Boston Globe). Frank Dell'Apa

Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist. Dell’Apa has covered seven World Cups, MLS since the league started, and continues to be involved with the NASL as part of a New York Cosmos Podcast.
