Oct. 23, 1930 – Hakoah All-Stars 0:3 (1:5 aggregate) Fall River Marksmen. Lewis Cup final at Polo Grounds (Att.: 2,500)

Billy Gonsalves scored twice and Arnie Oliver once for the Marksmen, whose goalkeeper was future Boston Red Sox first baseman Johnny Reder. Gonsalves (b. Aug. 10, 1908 in Portsmouth, R.I.) and Oliver (b. May 22, 1907 in New Bedford, Mass.) were members of the U.S. national team that reached the semifinals of the 1930 World Cup in Uruguay. The U.S. team also included forwards James Brown, 21, who would go on to play and coach in Connecticut and Fall River’s Bert Patenaude, 20, the first player to complete a hat trick in the World Cup, plus team captain Tom Florie of Providence. Argentinian Jorge Piotti scored twice as the Boston Tigers moved within a point of first-place Philadelphia in the ASL standings. Brazilian cousins Carlos and Gilson Metidieri were featured in a Boston Globe story, noting Gilson had scored five goals in a recent match for Boston.

The Boston SC team started its inaugural season with a 7W-0L-4T record, going on to finish fourth place behind the Fall River Marksmen, Bethlehem Steel and the Brooklyn Wanderers in the American Soccer League standings. Boston’s first nickname was “Woodsies,” after team president G.A.G. Wood, then changed to Wonder Workers. Foxboro Stadium was named to play host to the initial MLS Cup final on Jan. 19, 1996, kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20.

“When it comes to sports cities in the world, Boston is one of the best,” MLS commissioner Doug Logan said during a press conference at the stadium. “Sports are part of the fabric, the makeup of the area. Dario Fabbro (15’) and Pat Noonan (39’) scored as the New England Revolution (11-9-9) clinched a plus-.500 regular-season record for the first time. This was also Matt Reis’ first victory as Revolution goalkeeper and the first of four successive matchups between the teams in four weeks – two to conclude the regular season and two playoff matches (the Revolution had a 3W-0L-1D mark). Six months later, the New England Revolution opened its inaugural season, going on to finish in fifth place in the MLS Eastern Conference and out of playoff contention. The Revolution attracted a following, kicking off with a match against D.C. United, which would go on to win the first MLS Cup, played at Foxboro Stadium on Oct. 20, 1996. Oct. 16, 1905 – Greater Boston 0:5 Pilgrims at South End Grounds (Att.: 3,000)

Center forward Vivian J Woodward, scored twice for the Pilgrims, an English team that won 11 of 12 games (72-7 goal differential) on a two-month tour of the U.S. Woodward starred for Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, and was the England national team’s leading scorer. Taylor Twellman’s 35th-minute goal made the difference as the Revolution concluded their best regular season with a 17W-7L-8D (59 points) record. The Revolution spent the preseason in Bermuda and Ecuador, and started strong, setting a season-opening team record with an 11-game (7-0-4) unbeaten streak. Oct. 14, 2015 – Juan Carlos Osorio named Mexico national team manager

Osorio competed at high levels in Colombia and Brazil before moving to the U.S. in the early 1980s, then playing for the University of New Haven and Southern Connecticut State. Osorio scored four goals and was named all-NECC and all-New England as New Haven compiled an 11W-7L-1D record in 1985. Frank Dell'Apa

Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist. Dell’Apa has covered seven World Cups, MLS since the league started, and continues to be involved with the NASL as part of a New York Cosmos Podcast.
