Sept. 22, 2000 – Chicago Fire 6:0 Revolution, MLS playoffs, Soldier Field (Att.: 5,972)

The Chicago Fire handed the Revolution their worst defeat, equaled by a 6-0 result in a regular-season match at Real Salt Lake in 2009. The record was snapped in a 7-0 loss to Atlanta United on Sept. 13, 2017. This series ignited the rivalry between the Revolution and Fire, which went on to lose, 1-0, to Kansas City in the MLS Cup final.

The Revolution needed a victory, the Crew at least a draw, to qualify for the fourth and final MLS Eastern Conference playoff place. “The Revolution … were thwarted only by the consistently spectacular goalkeeping of Brad Friedel” before the largest Revolution home crowd of the season. The attendance figure was not surpassed for an MLS regular-season stand-alone game until 2008. Goal: McBride (37’).

Sept. 17, 1921 – J&P Coats 0:3 Philadelphia Field Club, American Soccer League inaugural games

Philadelphia FC, essentially the Bethlehem Steel team that won four of the first six U.S. Open Cup titles (1915, ’16, ’18, ’19), got off to a strong start on the way to winning the ASL’s first championship. Dugald “Dougie” Campbell scored all the goals in the opener. Philadelphia’s Harold Brittan won the scoring title with 24 goals and teammate Tommy “Whitey” Fleming added 15 goals. The Revolution’s sixth successive win tied a streak set in 2005 and also increased unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1). Revolution (13W-6L-6D, 45 points) move within a point of clinching a playoff spot, improving home unbeaten streak to nine games (5-0-4). Khano Smith’s advances on the left against Dallas’ converted right back Drew Moor keyed the Revolution attack. Goals: Noonan 2, Ralston, Smith; Ruiz 2. Frank Dell'Apa

Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist. Dell’Apa has covered seven World Cups, MLS since the league started, and continues to be involved with the NASL as part of a New York Cosmos Podcast.
