In a 1990 interview, Arnie Oliver (New Bedford, Mass.) recalled having scored the deciding goal in a U.S. 4-3 victory over Santos FC, only for next day newspaper accounts to report the score as a draw. Diego Fagundez (16) became the youngest scorer at Gillette Stadium in his first MLS game for the New England Revolution, Shalrie Joseph converted team record 12th penalty kick.

Fagundez had played in two U.S. Open Cup road matches before making his MLS debut. Previous youngest scorer at Gillette was Canada’s Kara Lang (Romero/16 years, 11 months) in a 3-1 win over Japan in the 2003 Women’s World Cup. U.S. manager William R. Cummings’ official report lists James Gentle (Brookline High School/University of Pennsylvania) as the team’s goal-scorer in this post-World Cup match. Other reports name the scorer as Bert Patenaude, who is listed with having scored 10 goals (plus another eight disallowed) during the 10-game U.S. campaign in the 1930 World Cup and post-tournament tour of South America. The Norwegians (1-1-1, 3 points) finished in third place and Qatar (0-2-1, 1 point) last in Group A of the 1984 Olympic soccer tournament. The Qataris missed a penalty kick and were issued three red cards by referee Bester Kalombo. Joar Vaadal scored both goals on his 24th birthday.

Mario Mandzukic opened the scoring for Juventus against Roma. The Bianconeri took the lead for the first time in three New England performances – they drew with the U.S. national team (0-0) at the Yale Bowl in 1991 and Barcelona (2-2) at Gillette Stadium in 2003. Roma, which has played in Boston three times (2W-1L-0D) since 1972, was performing in Foxborough for the first time. Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist. Dell’Apa has covered seven World Cups, MLS since the league started, and continues to be involved with the NASL as part of a New York Cosmos Podcast.
