Gambian Charlie Thomas, a former Harvard star, scored the first goal off a Clair De Boer rebound for the Boston Astros. Itamar Alves broke a 1-1 halftime deadlock in 49th minute. Professional soccer games were played at both the Cycledrome and Kinsley Park in Providence in the 1920s and ‘30s. Frank Dell'Apa

Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist. Dell’Apa has covered seven World Cups, MLS since the league started, and continues to be involved with the NASL as part of a New York Cosmos Podcast.
