Boston Bolts take first “victory,” the result against the Orlando Lions decided by post-match penalty kicks during a rainstorm at Nickerson Field. Randolph High School coach Ross Irwin converted deciding PK past Alan Rough, after Dave Pike equalized. Chris Otorubio opened the scoring with a 28th-minute free kick past former Yale goalkeeper Jeff Duback. The Bolts equalized on Kurt Manal’s finish off a Marvin Etienne (ex-Southern Conn. St.) assist. Duback told the Boston Globe’s Marvin Pave: “In all my years of playing the game, I can’t recall seeing fans staying around like that to congratulate a team.”

April 30, 1939 – Chicago Manhattan Beer 0:1 St. Mary’s Celtic (Brooklyn), National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) final

Billy Gonsalves goes 90’ for Chicago in both legs, scoring the Brewers’ only goal on a penalty kick in a 4-1 loss at Starlight Park (Bronx) on May 7, 1939. Gonsalves upped his career U.S. Cup total to 11 goals, tying Werner “Scotty” Nilsen, then added a 12th goal in 1943 and two more in 1944. Gonsalves’ record of 14 U.S. Open Cup goals has lasted 73 years.
