In the Boston Globe story entitled “More Stands for Boston ‘Pro’ Soccer,” team president G.A.G. Wood said: “We intend to make the Walpole St. Grounds a real soccer stadium, where all the big games in this State can be staged. Arrangements have been completed with the N.Y., N.H & H. officials to the end that the Boston team will not spend money needlessly. The New England high school championship game in Quincy, Mass., featured one of the year’s biggest crowds, “… gathered round the ropes when the game started saw a really wonderful exhibition from these boys.” Brown scored three goals, McGuire and Jepson one. The game appears to have been conducted under FIFA rules, two 45-minute halves, referee and two linesman,  no substitutes utilized. Archie Stark scored one of his 49 goals (in 43 matches) of the 1927-28 ASL season as Bethlehem Steel blanked the Fall River Marksmen. This was the sixth successive win for Boston SC (7-0-1, 15 points), second in the ASL behind the Philadelphia Nationals (8-1-1, 17 points). Former Peru Olympic teamer Nestor Caceres (14’) and Manuel Lopez (47’) opened the scoring. Davey Brown opened the scoring with the first of his two goals, the U.S. breaking the game open with five second-half goals. Gordon Burness, who played for the U.S. in 1926, equalized off a header from Ed McLaine off a corner kick by former Blackburn Rovers and Queen’s Park Rangers winger Roy Faulkner. Archie Stark, who scored 67 goals for Bethlehem Steel in the 1924-25 ASL season and later toured with Fall River, broke the deadlock with the first of his four goals, off a Billy Herd pass.

Burness, born in Montrose, Scotland,  joined the Boston Wonder Workers in 1927 and won the 1931 National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) with the Fall River Marksmen. Burness and younger brother Harry performed together on the Wonder Workers and continued to compete in the Boston area for several years.
