“President [G.A.G.] Wood is opening the purse strings to give Boston a winning team. The value of Tommy Muirhead, Alex McNab, McMillan, J. Ballantyne, W. Paterson and Willie Ballantyne, if placed in the open market and priced as transfer fees go on the other side today, would amount to close to $65,000. That is a conservative estimate. Patriots’ Day game interrupted by on-field brawl. On April 18, Gov. Alvan Fuller received the reigning Copa America and Olympic champions at the State House (Fuller was also being petitioned to review the Sacco & Vanzetti case). The Boston Marathon was conducted in 82-degree heat. Only three runners broke three-hour mark, Clarence De Mar winning in 2 hours, 40 minutes. Boston SC’s Jimmy Cairney scored the winning goal with a “back heeler” that deflected off Caldwell past New Bedford Whalrs goalkeeper Johnny Reder (who would go on to play first base for the Red Sox in 1932). This was the sixth successive win for Boston SC (7-0-1, 15 points), second in the ASL behind the Philadelphia Nationals (8-1-1, 17 points). Former Peru Olympic teamer Nestor Caceres (14’) and Manuel Lopez (47’) opened the scoring. Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist. Dell’Apa has covered seven World Cups, MLS since the league started, and continues to be involved with the NASL as part of a New York Cosmos Podcast.
