Fall River’s John Souza scored the second goal as the U.S. took a 4-0 lead over the Cubans, virtually clinching a berth in the 1950 World Cup. The U.S. scorers were Walter Bahr (16th), Souza (23rd), Matevich (30th and 35th) and Frank “Pee Wee” Wallace (48th). The U.S. lineup also included Manuel Martin, Souza’s Ponta Delgada teammate. Sept. 20, 1930 – New Bedford Whalers 5:3 Newark Americans, National Challenge Cup

The New Bedford Whalers defeated the Americans despite a Bert Patenaude hat trick for Newark, both teams defying an ASL vote to boycott the cup. Sept. 18, 1894 – Boston Beaneaters begin training

The Boston entry was among six teams in the American League of Professional Football, finishing in third place (4W-1L-0D, 8 points) as the season was called off after a few weeks. Diego Fagundez (second minute) and Kelyn Rowe (65th) scored as the New England Revolution tied a team record winning streak set in 2005. The Revolution (13W-9L-7D, 46 points) moved within a point of clinching a playoff berth for the third successive season. The Revolution then faded, failing to win another match until the regular season-ender, then losing in their playoff-opener. Wolde Harris’ 50th-minute goal deflected off current New England Revolution assistant coach Tom Soehn to give the Revolution their first MLS playoff advantage. Sept. 11, 1999 – Death knell for MLS ‘shootouts’ — Walter Zenga’s final game in goal

The New England Revolution’s Jeff Causey was red-carded in a post-match shootout, replacement Joe-Max Moore slipping a green shirt over his No. 9 jersey, then failing to stop three Miami Fusion attempts. The farcical situation helped lead to the demise of the shootout in MLS. Said Don Garber, who had replaced Doug Logan as MLS commissioner in August 2000: “The shootout has been our biggest controversy. Every meeting we have always comes back to it. The first U.S. Open Cup game in Foxborough turned into a disappointment for the New England Revolution.

The Revolution became the first MLS team to lose to an amateur team as Chad Schomaker capitalized on a Carlos Parra turnover to score a 90th-minute goal for the Bucks. The Revolution lost to the Long Island Roughriders, 4-3, in extra time, in their debut U.S. Open Cup debut in 1997, then skipped the competition for two years. Frank Dell'Apa

Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist. Dell’Apa has covered seven World Cups, MLS since the league started, and continues to be involved with the NASL as part of a New York Cosmos Podcast.
