Jan. 29, 2006 – Taylor Twellman hat trick, U.S. 5×0 Norway

January 29, 2017 by frankdellapa@gmail.com

Taylor Twellman seemed to be hitting his stride as an all-around striker under the guidance of Revolution assistant coach Paul Mariner, and he started the year strong. But Bruce Arena went with Brian Ching for the World Cup team, naming Twellman as an alternate.

There probably was not a better pure goal-scorer than Twellman in his generation. In his Revolution career, Twellman scored 101 regular-season goals in 174 games; 10 goals in 21 post-season games; seven in 10 U.S. Open Cup matches; plus one in five Champions Cup games. Twellman finished with six goals in 30 U.S. appearances.

We can’t know how many goals Twellman might have ended up with had he remained healthy, or how successful he would have been had the Revolution accepted a $3.5 million transfer offer from Preston North End in 2007. [Read more…] about Jan. 29, 2006 – Taylor Twellman hat trick, U.S. 5×0 Norway

Jan. 22, 2010 – Revolution acquire Burpo and Gibbs, lose Larentowicz

Jan. 22, 2010 – Revolution acquire Preston Burpo and Cory Gibbs from Colorado in exchange for Jeff Larentowicz and Wells Thompson

This deal was set up after Larentowicz decided to play out his contract. And it did not work out well for the Revolution. Larentowicz had proven to be a fundamental piece of the Revolution midfield, and one of the last remaining connections to the successful teams of the recent past. But the Revolution were unwilling to meet his price. At the time, we calculated that Larentowicz would have needed to stay nine years with the Revolution to earn what he was going to make in four years by leaving. Jan. 21, 2005 – New England Revolution acquire goalkeeper Doug Warren from D.C. United in exchange for a draft choice; sign Joe Franchino, Marshall Leonard, Steve Ralston, Matt Reis

The Revolution took care of business in the off-season and got off to their best start ever in ’05. The Revolution had perfected the art of finishing strong, but this was the first time they got off to a fast start, going unbeaten in their first 11 games. The team’s early success was extraordinary, considering it had produced only one plus-.500 season in nine years. The Revolution went on to finish 17W-7L-8D (59 pts.) but lost, 1-0, in extra time to the LA Galaxy in the final in Frisco, Texas. Shalrie Joseph was named Revolution MVP and Taylor Twellman, who led the league in scoring with 17 goals, was named MLS MVP. Jan. 12, 2007 – Revolution select Wells Thompson No. 5, Amaechi Igwe No. 12 and Adam Cristman in the fourth round (48th overall) in MLS SuperDraft

Cristman looked to be carrying on a tradition of overachieving late-round Revolution picks, playing as a reserve in two of the biggest wins in team history, the 2007 U.S. Open Cup and 2008 Superliga finals. Thompson started and scored in the Open Cup final, a 3-2 victory over FC Dallas, and Igwe went the distance in central defense in a 2-2 tie and penalty kick win in the Superliga title match against the Houston Dynamo. The New England Revolution transformed themselves over a one-month span in 2002.

On Jan. 8, 2002, the league announced the elimination of the Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny. That set up the Revolution for a bonanza as they had three of the first six picks in the dispersal draft. [Read more…] about Jan. 11, 2002 – Revolution transformed by Dispersal Draft
