The Revolution had a nine-game unbeaten streak snapped by the Chicago Fire in the MLS Eastern Conference final. Chris Armas (101’) converted a golden goal off a Damani Ralph feed, following a Justin Mapp advance on the right. The Revolution (12-9-9) completed its first plus-.500 regular season. Tommy Florie scored twice, including a wind-blown “Olimpico,” as Providence took a 2-0 lead before falling to a Fall River rally. Providence was leading by two goals in the 18th minute, but lost Egyptian forward Tewfik Abdallah to a broken leg in a clash with Coyle. Abdallah was taken to Fall River General Hospital. “Spectators Soaked, but 10,000 Stick it out” (The Boston Globe)

The Oneida Football Club competed in the “Boston Game,” a combination of rugby and soccer. “As the football was almost in constant motion after the kickoff our men were placed on the field where they would be most likely to catch or meet the ball when kicked by our opponents in order that we might return it without delay toward their goal.” –Gerritt Smith Miller

As a soccer saying goes: “The ball was round,” according to The Boston Globe.

Frank Dell'Apa

Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist. Dell’Apa has covered seven World Cups, MLS since the league started, and continues to be involved with the NASL as part of a New York Cosmos Podcast.
