SL Benfica attracted the largest soccer crowd of the day, greater than World Cup matches in France (Chile v Italy in Bordeaux, Austria v Cameroon in Toulouse). Carlos Rocha opened the scoring, then Bolivian Erwin “Platini” Sanchez converted free kicks in the 76th and 87th minutes for Benfica. This was Benfica’s first Foxborough appearance since 1972. May 23, 2002 – Revolution fire Fernando Clavijo, name Steve Nicol interim coach

Fernando Clavijo had coached the Revolution to their first .500 season and first playoff victory in 2000, then guided the team to the 2001 U.S. Open Cup final. But after a 2W-4L-1D start, Clavijo was replaced by assistant coach Steve Nicol on May 23, 2002.

Steve Nicol was a true believer in a 4-4-2 alignment, having experienced exceptional success with the formation while playing for Liverpool FC. Nicol was faithful to the setup into his third Revolution season, but this match convinced him to go to a 3-5-2. Taylor Twellman scored in the sixth and 39th minutes in the “soft” opening of Gillette Stadium, which had ceded naming rights to internet venture CMGI (College Marketing Group Information). Twellman went on to total a record 63 goals (61 for the Revolution, plus 2 for the U.S. national team) at the stadium. Twellman was in the midst of a six-game scoring streak in his first six starts, and would total 101 goals in 174 career games (.583 strike rate), the first player in MLS history with more than 100 goals scored in less than 200 matches. Frank Dell'Apa

Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist. Dell’Apa has covered seven World Cups, MLS since the league started, and continues to be involved with the NASL as part of a New York Cosmos Podcast.
