May 2, 2006 – Clint Dempsey named to U.S. World Cup team

May 2, 2017 by frankdellapa@gmail.com

Clint Dempsey went on to score a goal for the USMNT in the 2006 World Cup and went on to captain the team and total 56 goals in 132 international appearances.

Dempsey, who was playing his third season with the Revolution, continued a streak of New England-based players on U.S. World Cup teams extending to 1998 (Alexi Lalas, Joe-Max Moore) and 2002 (Carlos Llamosa). Four Revolution players were named to a reserve list: Pat Noonan; Steve Ralston, who had converted the goal to clinch a U.S. place in the World Cup finals; goalkeeper Matt Reis; and Taylor Twellman. April 17, 2004 – New England Revolution changing of the guard – Joe-Max Moore’s final home game, Clint Dempsey’s first start

April 17, 2017 by frankdellapa@gmail.com

Joe-Max Moore set up Taylor Twellman for the Revolution goal in the team’s home-opener, but it turned out he would play only one more game before sustaining a career-ending injury. Landon Donovan led the way with a goal and assist on an Arturo Alvarez finish for the reigning MLS Cup champion Earthquakes.

April 13, 1996 – New England Revolution’s first game

Tampa Bay Mutiny 3:2 Revolution at Tampa Stadium (Att.: 26,473)

Rob Ukrop gave the Revolution a 20th-minute lead, finishing a Welton cross, Alexi Lalas starting the sequence from central defense. The Mutiny scored on three set pieces, Revolution defender Mike Burns disputing the foul that led to the third goal, saying “the referee (Zimmerman Boulos) knows he made a mistake.” Roy Lassiter’s 25th-minute goal tied the score, the first of his 27 for the season, which remains an MLS record. Ivan McKinley, who would play for the Revolution from 1997-2000, broke the deadlock early in the second half, and U.S. national team defender Steve Pittman converted off a Carlos Valderrama assist for a 3-1 lead, before Ukrop cut the deficit in the 70th minute. Ukrop would not score another goal for the Revolution, and was waived after playing nine games as the team set up roster space for acquiring Joe-Max Moore. March 1, 1999 – Revolution 1×0 Alania Vladikavkaz

March 1, 2017 by frankdellapa@gmail.com

A Joe-Max Moore free kick gave the Revolution a 1-0 win over Alania Vladikavkaz, which had won the Russian title in 1995, finished second in ’96, 10th in ’97 and eighth in ’98. The preseason match was staged in Massa, Italy. Alania had several national team players, plus five Brazilians, who seemed to be under the most pressure after the defeat. Valeriy Gazzaev was coaching the Snow Leopards, and he did not take losses lightly. This was a preseason game, but the competitive level was intense. Early in the match, Raimondas Zutautas ripped a necklace off of Giovanni Savarese, and I never found out why. [Read more…] about March 1, 1999 – Revolution 1×0 Alania Vladikavkaz

Feb. 13, 2012 – Revolution acquire Saër Sène on free transfer from Bayern Munich

February 13, 2017 by frankdellapa@gmail.com

Saër Sène made one of Gillette Stadium’s most spectacular debuts, scoring 28 seconds into his first match. The goal gave the Revolution  a 1-0 win over the Portland Timbers on March 24, 2012, their first victory under coach Jay Heaps. Sène totaled 11 goals in 23 games during the 2012 season, and finished with 17 goals in three Revolution seasons, his career cut short by injury.

Sène, whose father, Oumar, played for Paris Saint-Germain, was with  Bayern Munich II from 2009-12. Among his coaches was Hermann Gerland, who coached Joe-Max Moore at FC Nurnberg in the ‘90s and is now first team assistant.

Jan. 27, 2005 – Joe-Max Moore announces retirement

January 28, 2017 by frankdellapa@gmail.com

The Revolution built their original team around defenders Mike Burns and Alexi Lalas for their first MLS season in 1996. But the Revolution did not have a proven scorer on the roster until Joe-Max came along midway through the first season, contributing 11 goals in 14 games. Moore struggled with injuries, but clearly believed the Revolution were building an MLS title-contending team when he returned for 2005 preseason. The site of the minicamp workout is not stated in my story (below) in 1/28/2005 editions of the Boston Globe, but I believe it was on the turf at the Gillette Bubble/Field House, which proved to be a risky surface for veteran players.

MOORE MAKES CALL: NO MORE

Revolution forward Joe-Max Moore, the team’s last remaining member from the inaugural 1996 MLS season, announced his retirement yesterday, less than two weeks after reinjuring the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during a minicamp scrimmage.
