The Boston Globe headlined: “Soccer Fans Spent About $100,000 Going to that Game Yesterday” after Fall River defeated Bethlehem Steel. 2-0, in the National Challenge Cup Eastern final in Brooklyn.

The Globe estimated 5,000 supporters had traveled from Fall River “and other Massachusetts towns,” a trip estimated to cost about $25 – teams and fans usually traveled by boat. The Fall River Marksmen blanked rivals New Bedford in a semifinal match in Providence as “More than 15,000 persons were crowded into (Kinsley Park) and when the police ordered gates closed more than 5,000 were turned away … a section of a temporary stand collapsed early in the day, throwing between 50 and 75 men to the ground.”

Brooklyn Wanderers right half Mahrer opened the scoring with a free kick in the opening minute of the second half. According to The Boston Globe, for the Fall River Marksmen’s National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) game against Bethlehem Steel, owner Sam Mark … “has chartered two steamers, SS Priscilla and Chester W. Chapin, and there is no room left on either, so many of the Fall River fans will have to make other arrangements. Frank Dell'Apa

Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist. Dell’Apa has covered seven World Cups, MLS since the league started, and continues to be involved with the NASL as part of a New York Cosmos Podcast.
