March 27, 2004 – New Orleans Shellshockers 2:6 Revolution at Tulane University

The final game of the Revolution’s 2004 preseason campaign started badly. Jose “Pepe” Cancela and the Shellshockers’ Andrew Barron were red-carded by Bay State referee Erich Simmons following an 11th-minute altercation, and the Revolution fell behind, 1-0, after a 45th-minute penalty kick. Then, Carlos Llamosa sustained a season-ending knee injury late in the second half.

There was one major bright spot for the Revolution, though. Andy Dorman, a 79th-minute substitute for Clint Dempsey, scored in his first appearance, arriving late to camp after concluding studies at Boston University. Dorman went on to become a valuable addition to the Revolution midfield before departing on a free transfer to St. Mirren after the 2007 season. Chris Aduama photo

Shalrie Joseph led the Revolution in scoring (8 goals) during the 2011 season, a statistic indicating his impressive versatility and also the team’s lack of strikers that year. Joseph totaled a Revolution record 305 games in all competitions, carrying the Revolution as far as possible in his final seasons as the team’s supporting cast declined. March 8, 2006 – Alajuelense 1×0 Revolution

This was the second time in four years the Revolution had been eliminated by Alajuelense in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Carlos “Zorro” Hernandez’ 90th-minute free kick made the difference after the teams had played to a 0-0 draw in the first leg Feb. 22, 2006 in Hamilton, Bermuda. The first game was a “home” match for the Revolution, and playing at Bermuda’s national stadium seemed like a better strategy than the team had settled for three years earlier, both games being contested at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela. Feb. 17, 2006 – Clint Dempsey scores 5 goals in preseason game

Clint Dempsey joined the Revolution as a defensive midfielder in 2004, but began emerging as an attacking threat early on. By ’06, Dempsey had become a regular with the U.S. national team, though he did not solidify a starting role until the final game of 2006 World Cup group play. In the preseason, Dempsey totaled 7 goals – he scored 5 goals in an 8-1 win over the Bermuda U-20 national team on this day.

Dempsey scored 8 goals in 21 games for the Revolution (plus another 4 for the U.S.) in ‘06. But, by the end of the season, Dempsey and several teammates were playing injured. The lack of an adequate bench, plus some physical opposition along the way, caused the Revolution to be below par in the MLS Cup final; Dempsey and Steve Ralston were unable to participate in penalty kicks as the Revolution lost to the Houston Dynamo after playing to a 1-1 draw.

Rusty Pierce played an important part in the New England Revolution’s transformative years, providing a spirited presence on the back line, and becoming a crowd favorite. Pierce brought a passionate approach to the field. I used to try to keep track of practice skirmishes between players, and Pierce was involved in many of them, both with teammates and opposition. Pierce concluded his time with the Revolution fourth on the career all competitions appearances list with 113 in 2004.

Jan. 20, 2007 – Clint Dempsey makes Premier League debut

Jan. 20, 2007 – Clint Dempsey makes Premier League debut as 83rd-minute substitute for Moritz Volz. Fulham 1×1 Tottenham

Dempsey’s stated goal was to move on from MLS to a career in Europe and, after three seasons with the Revolution, he made the move on Jan. 11, 2007. Nine days later, Dempsey was in the Cottagers’ lineup. Dempsey went on to become first U.S. player to perform in a major European final (Atletico Madrid 2×1 Fulham) May 12, 2010, set a record for a U.S. player in the Premiership with his 37th goal Dec. 5, 2011; first U.S. player to complete a hat trick in the Premier (vs. Newcastle Jan. 21, 2012). Dempsey set a Fulham record for Premier League goals with his 15th against Bolton Wanderers April 7, 2012 and finished fourth in PFWAA Player of the Year voting before transferring to Tottenham Aug. 31, 2012. His first Spurs’ goal was a game-winner in 3-2 victory at Manchester United Sept. 29, 2012.

Jan. 16, 2004 – New England Revolution select Clint Dempsey with No. 8 pick, Felix Brillant (56th overall) and Andy Dorman (58th overall) in sixth round of MLS SuperDraft

Some good and some not-so-good players were chosen ahead of Dempsey. But what boggles belief is that Dempsey had trained with Dallas and wanted to play there, since it was close to his Nacogdoches home – yet the Burn passed him by twice, to go for Ramon Nuñez and Clarence Goodson. I recall an early-season 2004 interview with Dempsey in which he expressed shock, and a hint of resentment, in having been selected later than Freddy Adu (and being paid considerably less).
