This event kicked off the U.S. Open Cup, then called the National Challenge Cup, which has become the most enduring of U.S. team sporting competitions, in terms of continuity and longevity. Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist.
