Boston’s history with Santos & the Seleção

Brazilian teams have been visiting the Boston area since Pelé led Santos FC on a visit to Fenway Park nearly 50 years ago. The match marked a milestone in modern soccer promotion for the area, attracting 18,431 on July 9, 1968, indicating soccer could be a viable professional sport in Boston, after decades of the sport having been shunted aside.

Santos’ 7-1 victory over the Boston Beacons also attracted mainstream media attention, which was not easy to do. Prominent bylines included Peter Gammons, Leigh Montville, Marvin Pave, Bob Sales. The stories were complimentary about Santos’ performance, Pelé earning plenty of praise. And nearly every story made the same factual error, stating Santos had twice won the World Cup. Remarkably, at that time, even the best and brightest of mainstream journalism had difficulty distinguishing between club and country competitions.

Final game of U.S. post-1930 World Cup tour. James Brown, 21, headed to Manchester United in 1932, scored for the U.S. Carvalho Leite, who played in the 1930 World Cup and had scored for Brazil in a 4-3 win over the U.S. on April 17, 1930, converted one of Botafogo’s goals. Brown, Mike Bookie, Arnie Oliver, Bert Patenaude were playing their final game for the U.S. national team. Fall River Marksmen teammates Billy Gonsalves, 22, and Bert Patenaude, 20, provided the U.S. goals against Brazil in a post-1930 World Cup match. Patenaude led the team with 10 goals (plus eight goals disallowed), all scored in seven games during the World Cup and post-WC tour. Nov. 11, 2006 – Caio Canedo Correa scores in final high school game

Caio left Nantucket High School at age 16 for a trial with Volta Redonda FC, the club of his father, Luiz Alberto “Lulu” Canedo. The move paid off as Caio impressed with the youth team, then joined Sao Paulo FC’s junior team. Caio had a tryout with Udinese in Italy, returned to play for Volta Redonda, then signed with Botafogo as an 18-year-old. June 6, 2008 – Venezuela 2:0 Brazil at Gillette Stadium (Att.: 53,045)

Venezuela’s Vinotinto provided one of the greatest upsets in the history of New England sports with this victory over Brazil. The Brazilians went into this match with a record of 17-0-0 (78-4 goal differential) against Venezuela since the series started in 1969, and were booed off the field by a raucous Friday night crowd. Giancarlo Maldonado (fifth minute) gave Venezuela its first advantage ever over Brazil and Ronald Vargas (44th) upped the lead to 2-0 at halftime.
