Aug. 16, 1944 – Lt. Henry E. “Harry” Burness, serving in U.S. Army, killed in action in France

Harry Burness played for the Boston Wonder Workers and other teams in the ASL, his career continuing into the ‘40s. His brother, Gordon Burness (1907-89), played for the U.S. national team and resided in Needham, Mass., while working for Exxon Oil Co.

Thomas Swords of Fall River, Mass., was captain of the U.S. national team for its first overseas tour. New Bedford Whalers’ captain Jimmy Montgomerie potential tying goal hits bar and disallowed. Montgomerie then “rushed at the arbiter and was put out of the game.” Goals: Fitzpatrick, Dick, Paterson; Florie, Toner.

Aug. 13, 1968 – St. Louis Stars 1:3 Boston Beacons, Busch Memorial Stadium

  Boston Beacons (7W-15L-5D), last place in NASL Atlantic Division, spoil Stars’ chance to win Gulf Division title. Goals: Frankiewicz; Dyreborg 2, Liposinovic.

Aug. 12, 2007 – Revolution 1:0 LA Galaxy (Att.: 35,402)

David Beckham’s presence – on the Galaxy bench – attracted the largest Gillette Stadium soccer attendance since 2002 MLS Cup. Revolution (10W-4L-6D, 36 points) retained first place in MLS overall standings. Celtic Ray Allen participated in the ceremonial opening kickoff. Goal: Twellman 55’.

Aug. 11, 1976 – Toronto Metros-Croatia 6:2 Boston Minutemen (Att.: 5,545)

Toronto clinches second place and Boston Minutemen last place in NASL Northern Division, with one game remaining. Toronto, which goes on to win 1976 Soccer Bowl title, includes former Minutemen Eusebio and Wolfgang Suhnholz. Goals: Eusebio 4, Ivan Lukacevic 2; Sal Lo Grasso, Tom Walsh.
