Thomas Swords of Fall River, Mass., was captain of the U.S. national team for its first overseas tour. This was the opener of a six-game series in Sweden and Norway. “Most conspicuous of all the features of the trip was the wonderful playing of the American team.” (Spalding’s Official Foot Ball Guide) Goals: R. Gunnarsson; Heminsley. Note: King Gustaf V in attendance.

Aug. 17, 1916 – Baseball game v Vasteras (Att. 2,000)

Swords plays RF, then joins Vasteras to play catcher, and pitched for Vasteras in another game on Aug. 22.

Aug. 15, 1972 – Ujpest Dozsa 2:0 AS Roma, preseason match at Nickerson Field (Att.: 5,000)

Roma coached by Helenio Herrera, who guided Inter to the 1966 European Champions Cup title. Goals: Sandor Zambo (3), Ferenc Bene (25). Referee Frank Mirisola played for Boston SC, and went on to become supervisor of referees for City of Boston high schools.

12th consecutive Minutemen loss, final game of season. Goals: Bowery (3), Tony Forte; Cliff Marshall (3), Gordon Fearney, Steve Baumann.

Aug. 15, 2001 – Revolution acquire Leo Cullen from Miami in trade for Shaker Asad and Johnny Torres

Aug. 15, 2006 – Revolution’s Clint Dempsey receives two-week suspension after clash with Jimmy Conrad. Dempsey was not cautioned on the play, Conrad’s jaw broken.
