Scotland had an 8W-1L-0D record, losing, 2-0, to Belfast Celtic at Triborough Stadium on Randall’s Island in New York on May 29, 1949, on a North American tour. Rangers’ Willie Thornton scored twice, Derby County’s Willie Steel once. Thornton converted off a 19th-minute McKenzie corner, then Frank “Shorty” Moniz equalized off a John Souza feed. The Revolution became the first MLS team to lose to an amateur team in Foxborough’s inaugural U.S. Open Cup match. The Revolution fell to the Long Island Roughriders, 4-3, in extra time, in their U.S. Open Cup debut in 1997, then skipped the competition for two years. The Revolution gambled by opening Foxboro Stadium, drawing a “lively but all-time low” attendance (until a 947 crowd arrived for a 7-1 win in a rematch with the Bucks in 2001). Ponta Delgada, defending National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) and U.S. Amateur Cup champion, sustained its first home loss in four seasons. Haiti’s Joe Gaetjens, who would go on to star for the U.S. national team, led the way, the Boston Globe misspelling his first name: “Center forward Jose Gaetjens scored both Brookhattan goals.”

SL Benfica attracted the largest soccer crowd of the day, greater than World Cup matches in France (Chile v Italy in Bordeaux, Austria v Cameroon in Toulouse). Carlos Rocha opened the scoring, then Bolivian Erwin “Platini” Sanchez converted free kicks in the 76th and 87th minutes for Benfica. This was Benfica’s first Foxborough appearance since 1972. Manchester United compiled a 7W-2L-1D record (37-14 goal differential) during an eight-city tour from May 14-June 12, 1960. United lost to 1860 Munich and had a 2W-1L-1D record against Hearts. Dennis Viollet, whose 32-goal season in 1959-60 remains a Manchester United record, was making one of his first visits to the U.S. Viollet returned as an assistant coach with the New England Tea Men, moving with the team to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1980.
