May 10, 1992 – Mike Masters scores first goal by U.S. player at Wembley

Mike Masters played basketball and soccer at Williams College, teaming with future New England Revolution defender Dan Calichman (Toronto FC assistant coach) and goalkeeper Rob Blanck (Navy women’s team assistant to former Harvard assistant Carin Jennings Gabarra) on Mike Russo’s soccer team. Masters then went on to perform for the Albany Capitals and San Francisco Blackhawks, before moving to England on a free transfer in January of 1992. In 22 years of existence, the Revolution have won five season-openers – one since Kheli Dube’s goal made the difference in a 1-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2009 opener. Dube totaled 19 goals in 91 matches in all competitions for the Revolution. Dube played for the Revolution from 2008-11 and was on the squad during the ’08 CONCACAF Champions Cup, but did not participate in the team’s two-game campaign. Dube did compete in the African Champions Cup as a member of the Zimbabwe club Highlanders FC of Bulawayo. Dube’s experience (combination of international and collegiate), plus his timing and finishing ability made him an effective player in MLS. Dube was prolific both at home, totaling 11 goals at Gillette Stadium (tied with Landon Donovan for 12th on the all-time list), and away. Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist. Dell’Apa has covered seven World Cups, MLS since the league started, and continues to be involved with the NASL as part of a New York Cosmos Podcast.
