Revolution victory over Fire concludes their best regular-season (17W-7L-8D, 59 points), second-highest point total for an Eastern Conference team in MLS’ 10-year history. Taylor Twellman (17 goals in 25 games) MLS scoring champion. The U.S. trained at Harvard University’s Ohiri Field, but Donovan, cut from the 2014 World Cup roster by coach Jurgen Klinsmann, did not arrive until game day. Donovan played 41 minutes, setting up Mix Diskerud’s goal (5’) and hitting the post. Enner Valencia (88’) equalized and current Revolution winger Cristian Penilla made his Ecuador debut. The Revolution were eliminated from the MLS playoffs in their first post-season appearance. Richie Williams (53’) scored past Walter Zenga off an assist from John Harkes on a Marco Etcheverry free kick. Joe-Max Moore’s penalty kick (72’) equalized before the Revolution lost a post-match shootout, Carlos Llamosa converting the decider. Former BU star (current assistant coach) Francis Okaroh red-carded for a 74th-minute tackle on Jaime Moreno in his final Revolution game. This was the first time the U.S. had clinched a berth in the World Cup finals in a home match, and the team’s seventh World Cup appearance. Current Revolution coach Brad Friedel was in the U.S. goal and former Revolution star Joe-Max Moore converted in the third minute and on an 81st-minute penalty kick. Oct. 5, 1975 – Boston Astros’ Jose Neto named American Soccer League MVP

Brazilian Jose Neto led the American Soccer League with 23 goals as the Boston Astros (9W-3L-8D, 26 points) won the North Division and were ASL co-champions along with the New York Apollos. The Astros folded after the 1975 season and Neto went on to play for Memphis and the San Diego Sockers in the NASL. Rhode Island’s Mohammed “Baby Jet” Attiah (16 goals) was second in scoring and Connecticut’s Roberto Taylor (14 goals) was rookie of the year. Frank Dell'Apa

Frank Dell’Apa began covering soccer in the days of the original NASL. He was the Boston Globe’s soccer columnist for nearly 23 years before being recruited to work for a start-up television network in Miami. In late 2014, he returned to Boston, where he is based as a freelance journalist. Dell’Apa has covered seven World Cups, MLS since the league started, and continues to be involved with the NASL as part of a New York Cosmos Podcast.
