Sept. 5, 1929 – Fall River Marksmen 5:2 Brooklyn Hakoah All Stars, ASL match “first night game in the history of the game here”

Billy Gonsalves and Bert Patenaude scored twice and Bill McPherson added a penalty kick for the Marksmen in an ASL match under the lights.

The first night soccer game in history was contested in Sheffield, England, on Oct. 14, 1878.

In New England, the General Electric Field in Lynn began promoting games under the lights in 1923. An American football intrasquad game was held at GE Field Nov. 3, 1925.

Dec. 19, 1923 – GE United 2:2 St. Mary’s AA at General Electric Field

The Boston Globe: “… the first night soccer game played in this district. Gigantic flood lights, which were used in the recent GE v Tufts football game … and the balls will be whitewashed.” … “Night Soccer Test A Success/Flood Lights Produce the Effect of Broad Day”
