Sept. 30, 1928 – Fall River Reserves 8:0 General Electrics (Lynn, Mass.)

“Patenaude, center forward for the Fall River reserves, smashed all records for individual scoring in organized soccer in this city … when he netted six goals in the Massachusetts State League match … Five of the markers came in a row.” (The Boston Globe)

Bert Patenaude was 18 years old when he was playing for the Fall River Reserves. Less than two years later, Patenaude converted the first World Cup hat trick for the U.S. national team in Uruguay.

“Substitutes will be permitted in the Massachusetts State League after the North Massachusetts and New Hampshire State Assn. receive permission from the United States Soccer Association. That was the decision arrived at … at the State meeting at the American House.” (The Boston Globe)

Sept. 30, 1922 – J&P Coats 4:4 Dick, Kerr Ladies at Coats Field, Pawtucket, R.I. (Att.: 8,500)

Women’s professional soccer team played in New England for first time, sponsored by Dick, Kerr Ltd. Electric of Preston, England, competed against men’s teams on a nine-game (3W-3L-3D) tour. This was the second game of the tour, which began with a visit to the Paterson Silk Sox (6-3 loss). Goals: Reid, Tommy Fleming 2, Gallagher; Redford 2, Harris, Parr. Note: Dick, Kerr’s Alice Mills (1904-Oct. 12, 1994) settled in Seekonk, Mass., marrying J. Aime Lambert.
