Nov. 27, 1929 – Boston Wonder Workers disband

A dispute over the status of outside left Dave McEachern, who had been “award(ed)” to the New Bedford Whalers caused the Wonder Workers to cease competing in the Atlantic Coast Soccer League. Boston manager “McDonald stated he would play no more games unless given a square deal.”

The Boston Globe’s George Collins wrote that McEachern had gone to New Bedford “through channels of the subterranean route. Professional soccer will never get anywhere in this town under such conditions.”

“Nearly 4,000 foot ball enthusiasts packed every inch of space … this afternoon to see the Rover and cracks Canadian team play the association game. … The Rovers looked like mere boys when they appeared on the field with their athletic opponents, but the spectators soon saw that neither weight nor height was necessary to win. … The visitors attended the ‘Dark Secret’ this evening as guests of the Rovers, and both teams were present in a body at the Rugby game this morning.” (Fall River 14:12 Harvard, rugby game at North End ground – Att.: 800)

Archie Stark scored one of his 49 goals (in 43 matches) of the 1927-28 ASL season. Stark set a record with 67 regular-season goals for Bethlehem Steel in the 1924-25 season.
