May 4, 1930 – USFA “foreign relations committee” selects 15 players for World Cup team

Players with New England ties named to the first U.S. World Cup squad included: halfbacks Andy Auld (Providence), William Gonsalves (Fall River); and forwards James Brown (New York Giants), Thomas Florie (New Bedford), J.C. Gentle (Philadelphia), Bert Patenaude (Fall River). Arnold Oliver (New Bedford) also joined the U.S. team, which reached the semifinals of the 1930 World Cup in Uruguay.

May 4, 1918 – Fall River Rovers 2:2 (aet) Bethlehem Steel at Coates Field, National Challenge Cup final at Pawtucket, R.I. (Att.: 13,000)

Bethlehem Steel won replay, 3-0, on May 19, 1918.

May 4, 1947 – Ponta Delgada 2:0 Kensington Quoits SC (Philadelphia), National Amateur Cup Eastern final (Att.: 3,000)

Goals: John Sousa, “Quack” Travis.

May 4, 1955 – Connecticut All-Stars 1:11 Nurnberg FC at Hartford, Conn.

May 4, 1974 – Dallas Tornado 0:0 Boston Minutemen at Texas Stadium (Att.: 9,124)

This was the opening game for the Boston Minutemen, who reached the semifinals of the NASL playoffs in their first year. The roster included several internationals and English First Division players. Ade Coker and Carlos Metidieri performed for the U.S. national team; Steve Twellman, uncle of future New England Revolution all-time leading scorer Taylor Twellman. Ben Brewster, Dan Counce and Twellman were among the top U.S.-born players in the NASL.
