March 18, 1997 – Walter Zenga arrives in Boston to play for New England Revolution

Former Italian national team goalkeeper Walter Zenga sparked the Revolution to their first MLS playoff berth in 1997.

March 18, 1923 – Fall River Marksmen 3:2 J&P Coats, exhibition game at Mark’s Stadium (Att.: 4,000)

J&P had taken a 3-1 win over Fall River at Coats Field the previous day.

March 18, 1934 – Boston 1:5 [2:8] Pawtucket Rangers, National Cup New England final at Lincoln Park (Att.: 2,000)

Pawtucket Rangers lineup included U.S. national teamers Czerkiewicz rb, Martinelli rh, Auld ch, Dick. Boston’s U.S. internationals included Burness, Guyda. Note: Andrew W. Gajda/Guyda, nicknamed “Poly” or “Poley,” played quarterback at Manchester (N.H.) High School, then played and/or coached at Harvard, Lowell Institute, MIT. He also competed for the Boston Celtics and Lusitania Recreation, and was a starter on the 1936 U.S. Olympic team.

March 18, 1974 – ASL announces 20-game indoor season. ASL Board of Governors meeting in Boston

March 18, 2000 – Miami Fusion 1:1 Revolution at Lockhart Stadium, Fort Lauderdale (Att.: 8,782)

Fernando Clavijo’s first game as Revolution coach. Goals: Diego Serna 61’; Imad Baba 80’. Note: Miami lineup included Leo Cullen, Jay Heaps, Brian Kamler, Francis Okaroh, Jim Rooney, Diego Serna, Andy Williams and Eric Wynalda, all of whom either had played for or would play for the Revolution; plus, substitute Nelson Vargas (Holyoke, Mass., native).
