June 4, 1992 – Italy 2:0 Ireland, U.S. Cup at Foxboro Stadium (Att.: 34,797)

Post by

Giuseppe Signori, making his first start for Italy, nailed a 20-plus-yard free kick and earned a penalty, converted by Alessandro Costacurta.

Ireland committed 15 offside infractions as it struggled to contend with Italy’s back line and goalkeeper Walter Zenga, who sustained a black eye in a clash with Niall Quinn. Zenga, playing his final international, returned to perform for the Revolution in 1997 and became the team’s player-coach in 1999.

Signori, who scored 188 goals in Serie A playing for Foggia, Lazio, Sampdoria and Bologna, replaced Roberto Baggio in the lineup and proved to be an effective alternative, combining up front with Pierluigi Casiraghi and Roberto Mancini. Two years later, Baggio and Signori sparked Italy in the 1994 World Cup, but Signori clashed with coach Arrigo Sacchi and was benched for the title game against Brazil.
