June 2, 1973 – U.S. 1:4 SS Lazio at Dillon Stadium, Hartford (Att.: 4,500)

Post by

SS Lazio had a 2W-3L-0D record during a four-city North American tour from May 26-June 10. Lazio lost twice to Santos FC (in Jersey City and Chicago), then defeated a U.S. XI and Toronto Metros-Croatia before falling to Ecuador at Randall’s Island.

Giorgio Chinaglia went on to star for the New York Cosmos and Ferruccio Mazzola, son of former Torino great Valentino and brother of Inter’s Sandro, played for the Hartford Bicentennials. Chinaglia, Luciano Re Cecconi and Giuseppe Wilson left Lazio before the tour concluded to join the Italian national team.

Lazio began the tour less than a week after finishing in a tie with Milan for second place in Serie A, one point behind Juventus, the Scudetto decided on the final day of the season. Lazio would go on to win its first Serie A championship as Chinaglia won the scoring title with 24 goals in 1973-74.
