The Santos-Milan game was played in a tense atmosphere, as spectators were also tuned in to shortwave radio reports of the Italy v West Germany World Cup semifinal match being contested in Mexico City. Both teams were missing World Cup players, but most of the starters were available for this game.

Sources report a crowd of at least 18,000 for the match, though the Boston Globe story noted 4,500 attendance. Curiously, the Globe also reported a 4,500 attendance for Santos’ 8-0 win over the Boston Astros at Everett Stadium on June 12, 1970.

Pitico scored past Milan goalkeeper Fabio “Il Ragno Nero” Cudicini “with three minutes to play.”

Goals: Bruce Murray 3, Eric Eichmann 67; Raul Chacon 22.
