July 9, 1994 – Italy 2:1 Spain, World Cup quarterfinals, Foxboro Stadium (Att.: 53,400/54,605 )

Post by

Four days after Roberto Baggio scored an 89th-minute equalizer against Nigeria, he broke the deadlock in the 88th minute as Italy edged Spain. Giuseppe Signori, who replaced Antonio Conte after halftime, set up the deciding goal, laying off for Baggio, who rounded Andoni Zubizarreta.

Julio Salinas went in alone on Gianluca Pagliuca (83), then Pagliuca tipped a Fernando Hierro drive over the bar and Alessandro Costacurta cleared a header by Miguel Angel Nadal (Rafael’s uncle) off the line on the resulting corner.

During injury time, Mauro Tassotti elbowed Luis Enrique. Referee Sandor Puhl did not whistle a foul, nor did assistants notice one, though Enrique was bleeding from a broken nose and beseeching. On July 13, 1994, FIFA issued Tassotti an eight-game suspension, the first time the organization had used post-match video evidence to issue a punishment in the World Cup.

Attendance was announced at 54,605, later apparently revised down.

Goas: D. Baggio (26), R. Baggio (88); Caminero (59).
