Jan. 30, 1924 – Bethlehem Steel ‘Declines to Play at Fall River’

Post by

A National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) semifinal match between Bethlehem Steel and the Fall River Marksmen ended up being contested before a crowd of 20,000 at Dexter Park in Brooklyn on March 9, 1924.

On Jan. 30, 1924, The Boston Globe reported:

“… announced over the long-distance telephone … by one of the officials of the Bethlehem club. The official admitted that staging the final round of the big National classic at Fall River would mean a record gate of at least 10,000, and would also add a big revenue to the Bethlehem club’s coffers. That, however, is only a secondary consideration, according to the report, as the steel workers’ management would rather play to a free gate than at Fall River.”

Feb. 24, 1924 – Sam Mark … “has chartered two steamers, SS Priscilla and Chester W. Chapin and there is no room left on either, so many of the Fall River fans will have to make other arrangements. It is expected that between three and four thousand fans from the Massachusetts city will be in [cq] Dexter Field Sunday to root for their favorites.”

The match was postponed, Fall River then taking a 2-0 victory over Bethlehem Steel on March 9, 1924, and going on to win the 1924 U.S. Open Cup title.
