Former University of Rhode Island and Jamaican national team star Andy Williams scored both goals as the New England Revolution advanced to the U.S. Open Cup final for the first time.

Aug. 22, 1921 – American Soccer League announces Sept. 17, 1921 kickoff for initial season, player signings

Signings include George Richardson (New York FC) and former Tebo Yacht Basin stars Knowles, Lappin, Mitchell, Reynolds and Whalen (all played for J&P Coats in Pawtucket, R.I.). Neil Clarke and Harry Ratican “as yet unsigned. Fall River was after this pair, but probably did not bid high enough. … The arranging of the schedule of games was again held up, owing to some of the clubs having difficulty in obtaining possession of their grounds, due to the length of the baseball season … Skeptics are already predicting that the teams will not finish their schedule, but that remains to be seen. Soccer is fast taking hold on the American public and, given good football, the crowds should come up to expectations.” (The Boston Globe)

Aug. 22, 1973 – Connecticut Wildcats 1:0 Boston Astros, Dillon Stadium (Att.: 10,093)

Benny Brewster 79th-minute goal. Brewster (11 goals in 14 games) led the ASL in scoring until the final day of the season and scored in his only U.S. national team appearance in a 1-0 win over Bermuda at Dillon Stadium on Sept. 9, 1973. “My biggest thrill last year wasn’t the winning goal against Bermuda but my goal for the Wildcats against the Boston Astros in front of 10,000 fans in Hartford,” Brewster said.

Aug. 22, 1980 – New England Tea Men 1:0 Tampa Bay Rowdies, final Tea Men regular-season game, Schaefer Stadium (Att.: 25,132)

Salif Keita’s sixth free kick goal of season. Tea Men qualify for NASL playoffs, opener set against Fort Lauderdale Strikers or Tampa Bay on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 1980.

Aug. 22, 1998 – Revolution 1:5 LA Galaxy, Foxboro Stadium (Att.: 24,143)

Jamar Beasley, 18, makes Revolution debut, earns penalty kick on his first touch; Thomas Rongen’s final game as Revolution coach. Goals: Diaz Arce; Jones 3, Hermosillo 2.
