Joe-Max Moore had been the Revolution’s all-time leading scorer, but he would soon be overtaken by Taylor Twellman. Moore led the Revolution in scoring in 1996 (11 goals) and ’99 (15 goals), but his MLS career was hampered by injuries. Moore, who totaled 24 international goals and played in 1998 and 2002 World Cups for the U.S., retired after the 2004 season.
Sept. 28, 2003 – Columbus Crew 2:3 (aet) Revolution at Crew Stadium (Att.: 8,594)
The Crew took a 2-0 lead on goals by Westport’s Kyle Martino and Eric Denton. Moore’s 78th-minute free kick off the inside of the left post sparked a Revolution rally, Shalrie Joseph equalizing in the 81st minute with his first professional goal. After Joseph had been fouled, Joe Franchino’s 97th-minute free kick concluded the contest. These were the first free kick goals of the season for the Revolution (8W-9L-9D, 33 points), which escaped the Eastern Conference cellar and concluded the season with a seven-game (6-0-1) unbeaten streak before being eliminated by Chicago in the playoffs.
