March 24, 1888 – Boston Rovers 2:1 Fall River East Ends

Post by

Fitch scored the opening goal for the “new Boston Rovers Foot Ball Club, which was organized in this city a few months ago to play under the old association rules, which are so popular in England,” according to The Boston Globe. Fitch, “by a magnificent screw kick, shot the ball through the posts and obtained the first goal for the Rovers.”

In the Globe’s match preview: The Boston Rovers “will play (their) first match at the Union base ball grounds this afternoon … opponents will be the East Ends of Fall River, a club that has made a good record for itself.” Fall River manager George Priest “was captain of the Wolverhampton Wanderers in ’86 and ’87. Last year they tied the Aston Villa … three times.”

From the Globe game story: “The East Enders thought they would have a regular picnic with the boys of the Hub, and had decided early in the week to send several of their junior players, but on seeing the records of the players who were to represent the Rovers, they changed their minds and brought up their strongest team.”

The Boston Rovers later challenged the American Cup champion Fall River Rovers.

“The Boston Rovers, who through organizing so late in the season were debarred from competing for the cup offered by the American Association, herewith challenge the Fall River Rovers, winners of the trophy, to one or a series of games for the championship of America. Game to be played on neutral ground.” (Boston Globe, April 18 1888).
