July 19, 2003 – Landon Donovan first four-goal game at Gillette Stadium

Post by

Landon Donovan produced the first four-goal game at Gillette Stadium as the U.S. took a 5-0 victory over Cuba in a CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal match. This was also the first four-goal performance by a U.S. player since former Revolution striker Joe-Max Moore against El Salvador in 1993.Revolution midfielder Steve Ralston scored a goal and also combined with left wing Eddie Lewis to provide crosses for Donovan and Brian McBride.

“I haven’t been scoring a lot lately and it’s been a little frustrating, so it was good to get that first one,” Donovan said. “[Lewis and Ralston] are both phenomenal servers of the ball, the two best I’ve been involved with.”

The U.S. outscored El Salvador, Martinique and Cuba by a 9-0 margin over an eight-day period at Gillette, which had opened with a New England Revolution MLS match May 11, 2002. The U.S. then lost, 2-1, in extra time to Brazil in the semifinals in Miami July 23, 2003.
