Jan. 7, 1933 – Boston SC 3:1 Victoria Mills, National Challenge Cup, Brookline Town Field

Boston SC had a chance to make a run in the National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup), according to The Boston Globe: “There is magic to the word(s) “National Cup,” at least to soccer fans … While Boston has garnered most of the other soccer honors, at one time or another, winning the National Cup has eluded this city … (in 1926) the local pro team reached the semifinal but, when everyone expected Boston to win, the team collapsed and J&P Coats unexpectedly won.”

And Boston SC’s cup campaign got off to a strong start. But the “Blue and Gold” Boston team finished second on goal difference to the Pawtucket Rangers in a round robin format and was eliminated from the competition. The Rangers went on to reach the 1933 U.S. Open Cup semifinals.

“Only the superb goal-tending by Reder saved the score from being higher.”

Johnny Reder made his Major League baseball debut as a first baseman with the Boston Red Sox in 1932.

The Rangers team included four players – Andy Auld, Ed Czerkiewicz, Walter Dick, Tom Florie – who would compete with the U.S. national team in the 1934 World Cup in Italy.
