Feb. 24, 1929 – Fall River Wins on an Icy Field

Post by

The Fall River Marksmen took a 2-0 victory over the New Bedford Whalers in a Sunday game before a 3,500 crowd. The game “was well played despite the heavy condition of the field,” according to the Boston Globe story. In the second half, “ice commenced to form on the field, making play dangerous.” Tec White and Johnny Granger scored.

Fall River’s lineup included Malcolm Goldie, who had played for Clydebank in Scotland, also making an appearance for the U.S. national team in 1925. Goldie would go on to coach the MIT varsity team from 1933-41.

Fall River also had Bert Patenaude, who would go on to convert the World Cup’s first hat trick the next year in Uruguay. New Bedford’s lineup include Tommy Florie, a future U.S. national team captain.
