U.S. national team forward Benny Brewster’s 79th-minute goal made the difference. Brewster, born in Newton, Mass., played at Brown University, then played professionally with the Boston Astros, Wildcats, Boston Minutemen, Tacoma Tides and New England Tea Men before going on to a success coaching career with Boston College.

Brewster led the ASL in scoring until the final day of the season and was the Wolves’ leading scorer with 11 goals in 14 games.

Brewster scored in his only U.S. national team appearance in a 1-0 win over Bermuda at Dillon Stadium Sept. 9, 1973, the national team’s only Hartford appearance.

“My biggest thrill last year wasn’t the winning goal against Bermuda but my goal for the Wildcats against the Boston Astros in front of 10,000 fans in Hartford,” Brewster said.
